I grew up in Iowa, and Driftwood Pizza has always been a favorite. I don’t remember exactly what year they opened, but I do remember going there with my parents while my dad was still alive—and he passed away in 1996. My mom even celebrated her 80th birthday there, with both my siblings and me in attendance.

Recently, I took a trip to Iowa to visit my brother and one of my cousins. My friend HS came along, and since we both love pizza, I knew I had to introduce him to Driftwood Pizza. I had read somewhere that they had closed for a few years but later reopened—thankfully, they did.

My parents were always fond of their Sweet Shop pizza, which other places call Hawaiian pizza. It’s topped with Canadian bacon and pineapple. HS isn’t really a fan of pineapple on pizza, so instead we ordered the Supreme pizza, which comes loaded with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, sausage, beef, mushrooms, green olives, black olives, green peppers, onions, and cheese.

HS doesn’t like olives at all, and I was a bit skeptical about green olives on pizza myself. When the waitress finally came to our table—about 10 to 15 minutes after we arrived—we asked to have both the green and black olives left off. It took about 20 to 30 minutes for our pizza to arrive, and the taste was worth the wait. However, the olives were still on it. I can’t remember if the waitress said she forgot to tell the cook or if the cook forgot to do it, but either way, the olives stayed.

Despite that, HS just picked the olives off his slices, and we both agreed the pizza was excellent. The combination of toppings, sauce, and crust was spot-on, and the price for a large was very reasonable.

As for the atmosphere, I’d give it a 5 out of 5—laid-back, friendly, and pure small-town charm. The service I’d rate a 4, mostly because of the delay and the olive mix-up. The pizza itself? A solid 5 out of 5. Overall, I’m overlooking the service hiccup because of the atmosphere and the exceptional taste of the pizza, so I’m rating the entire experience a perfect 5 out of 5.

I’ve had pizza in many places across Iowa, and I truly believe Driftwood Pizza makes the best in the state—and possibly in the entire Midwest.
